The Lions Club of Salem was chartered by local residents in 1966. Today, it is a widely diverse group of more than 70 members from all parts of the United States. These men and women have chosen this beautiful area of the State of South Carolina for their home and share the Lions vision of community service.

The Salem Lions Club own and operate the only mobile sight-screening unit in the Upstate. This unit manned by Lions, travels throughout the area as requested to companies and organizations that hold health fairs to provide free testing for acuity and eye pressure. Over 26,000 people have been  screened since the club began this service in 1985

Salem Lions also contribute time, talent and money to meet other community needs such as aid to the visually handicapped and collecting eyeglasses and hearing aids for redistribution internationally.

The club offers financial support for the programs held at Rocky Bottom Camp of the Blind, provide free eye examinations and glasses to Salem area residents in need and sponsor scholarships at our local     schools.

We raise our funds by holding such events as an Annual Barbecue Dinner, Golf Tournament, Fruit Sales, Candy Day and Calendar sales.
In addtion two Pancake Breakfasts are held each year - providing a hearty breakfast for all who wish to attend.  These are held
in conjunction with other fellow Lions from Walhalla.

The club is presently involved, together with the Keowee Computer Club in providing computers to children in our local school
system, that due to financial difficulties would not be able to afford such a valuable tool.  Donations of use equipment are being
refurbished and provided to the local children together with help in setting up and operating the machines.

The Club is a member of the state-wide association of Lions Clubs, and part of District 32A in the Upstate. The State organization operates the Eye Bank. This entity collects and distributes corneas for transplant purposes. These Lions Clubs also sponsor and support the Storm Eye Institute, South Carolina Eye Research Center at MUSC in Charleston, SC.

On an International basis Lions Clubs are truly world wide with over 44,000 clubs in 185 countries. Lions International provides the platform for Lions to extend their humanitarian services on a universal scale, reaching out to all in need around the world, with friendship and peace.
